Editorial

RailKM measures a journey the way Indian Railways bills it — the shortest sanctioned track route in kilometres, not the road line on a phone map. These notes are written for staff filing HRMS passes, clerks checking break-journey entitlement, and passengers who want the exact figure before booking.

How to Calculate Exact Indian Railways Track Distance & Plan Multi-Via Routes

Type the origin and destination station codes into the route builder — NDLS for New Delhi, HWH for Howrah, BPL for Bhopal. The engine resolves each code, including older codes such as JHS and BCT, then runs a Dijkstra shortest-path search over 8,989 indexed stations and more than 17,000 track segments. It returns the shortest path Indian railway permits on that pair, measured as track kilometres rather than road kilometres. That railway track distance appears as Total Track Distance in the summary card.

If the journey has to run through a particular town, add Via stations. You can chain up to eight stops — for example NDLS → VGLJ → BPL, the pattern for a halt at Jhansi. Every leg carries its own kilometres and a running cumulative total, so a clerk can read the exact distance at Mathura Jn, Bina Jn or Itarsi Jn without doing the arithmetic by hand.

  • Add Via Station inserts an intermediate stop before the destination; up to eight stops in one chain.
  • Swap Origin / Destination reverses the chain in one click when the return pass is filed separately.
  • Clear Route empties every field and drops the ?route= parameter so a fresh journey can be typed. Each input also has a small × to clear one station.

When the chain is right, use Print / Download PDF Route for a route sheet listing every intermediate halt, junction and cumulative kilometre — the layout a checking inspector expects at the counter. RailKM is a route mapper free to use, with no sign-up and no advertising between you and the figure. Test it against a route you already know; that is the fastest way to decide whether it is the best route mapper for your section or just another route finder train India users abandon after one search.

HRMS E-Pass 15% Extra Distance Rule & Linear Routing Explained

For railway staff the pass is sanctioned on the shortest route between the two stations, called the base distance. HRMS then allows a grace margin of 15% over that base for practical routing — a different junction, a longer chord, or a train that does not run on the absolute shortest path. The three figures that decide a case are base distance, the 15% margin, and the maximum allowed pass distance.

Worked example: Gwalior to Bandra Terminus

Gwalior (GWL) to Bandra Terminus (BDTS) is 1,200 track kilometres on the shortest route, running through Bina Jn, Bhopal Jn, Itarsi Jn, Bhusaval Jn and Vadodara Jn. The 15% margin is 1,200 × 0.15 = 180 km. The maximum allowed HRMS pass distance is therefore 1,200 + 180 = 1,380 km. Any sanctioned route up to 1,380 km sits inside the limit; the excess beyond it is treated under the applicable pass rules. Tick the HRMS Pass 15% checkbox in the mapper and these three numbers are computed for the route you have entered.

The quicker-train alternate route

The Railway Servants (Pass) Rules also cover the faster alternative. If a route is longer than the shortest path but the train covering it has a shorter running time, the longer route may be sanctioned even when it crosses the 15% margin, because the pass follows the train a servant actually travels on. The test on the file is running time, not kilometres.

Privilege Pass, PTO and double-back rejections

A Privilege Pass for a full or half set is normally issued with a validity of five months. A Privilege Ticket Order (PTO) is issued on payment of one-third of the ordinary fare and holds good for the journey and period endorsed on the order.

Double-back is the most common reason a pass is returned. If the route touches the same station twice — a path that enters Itarsi Jn, runs out and returns through it — the routing is no longer linear and HRMS treats it as invalid unless no linear alternative exists. The RailKM double-back detector flags any repeated station in amber before you file, so the correction happens at the desk and not at the divisional office.

How Indian Railways Measures Track Kilometres & Distance-Based Fare Slabs

Rail distance is not road distance. A highway from Gwalior to Mumbai can be shorter or longer than the rail alignment, but Indian Railways charges along the track it actually owns: section by section, through real junction layouts, curves and gradients. RailKM rebuilds this by summing block distances between adjacent stations from open timetable data across 8,900-plus stations. That is why a rail figure rarely matches a phone map — the phone measures tarmac, the railway measures steel.

Break journey: commercial ticket vs HRMS pass

Two rules get mixed up at the booking window. On a normal commercial ticket a break journey is allowed once when the total journey is 500 km or more, and twice when it is 1,000 km or more. An HRMS Privilege Pass is looser — break journeys are taken at intermediate stations along the permitted route, subject to the pass validity and class, instead of the fixed 500 km and 1,000 km ticket thresholds.

Gauge width vs station-to-station distance

Two measurements share similar words and get confused. What is the distance between railway track rails is a gauge question: Indian Railways Broad Gauge is 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) between the two running rails. Station-to-station track distance is a route question: the chargeable length between two stations. Keep the two apart and the arithmetic stays clean.

Telescopic fare slabs

Fares ride the same kilometres through telescopic slabs, where the rate per kilometre falls as distance rises. A 1,200 km journey is charged in bands rather than at one flat rate, which is why Sleeper (SL), AC 3-Tier (3AC), AC 2-Tier (2AC) and AC First Class (1AC) move by different multipliers. RailKM applies standard-slab estimates to the computed total, so the fares track the actual track distance and not a straight-line guess.

Planning Connecting Trains & Multi-Via Junction Routes Without Double-Back

Two routes can share a start and finish and still be different pieces of railway. Delhi to Mumbai is the clearest example. The Agra–Gwalior–Jhansi–Bhopal–Itarsi line through Bhopal Jn and Itarsi Jn is the central route. The Mathura–Kota–Ratlam–Vadodara line through Kota Jn, Ratlam Jn and Vadodara Jn is the western route. A multi-via plan must pick one as its main line: NDLS → VGLJ → BPL and NDLS → KOTA → RTM are both valid linear chains, but mixing them carelessly sends the route back over ground it has already covered.

Double-backs appear at junctions where a line branches and returns. A path that enters Bina Jn, runs towards Katni, and comes back to Bina Jn reverses direction on the same block; the same happens if a plan re-enters Itarsi Jn or Vadodara Jn twice. RailKM marks any repeated station, so the fault is visible before the file moves.

Pick junction stops that sit in the direction of travel. For Delhi to Bangalore, going via Bhopal Jn and Itarsi Jn keeps the chain linear; adding Nagpur after Bhopal is valid on the central route, but adding Kota after Bhopal breaks it. Where two connecting trains are involved, chain the changeover station by name — HWH → NGP → BSL → CSMT — so the cumulative kilometre at the junction is on the record and the connecting-train allowance is defensible.

Major Indian Railways Trunk Corridors & HRMS 15% Distance Reference Table

These corridors generate the bulk of HRMS pass queries. Base kilometres are the shortest sanctioned track route; the margin is 15% of that base; the maximum is the sum. Confirm any figure against the current dataset in the mapper before filing, since a new chord line or a gauge conversion can shift a section.

Frequently asked questions

Railway distance, break-journey routing and the HRMS Pass 15% extra distance rule.

How does RailKM calculate Indian Railways track distance?
RailKM models the railway network as a weighted graph of stations connected by track segments and runs a shortest-path search that minimises total track kilometres. The result lists every intermediate halt with its cumulative distance from the origin.
What is the HRMS Pass 15% extra distance rule?
Under the Indian Railways HRMS (Human Resource Management System) pass facility, eligible employees and their dependants may travel by a permitted route up to the base distance plus a 15% extra margin. RailKM shows this as Base Distance, +15% margin and Maximum Allowed HRMS Pass Distance when you tick the HRMS checkbox.
How do I calculate the maximum allowed distance under the HRMS Pass 15% limit?
Tick “Check HRMS Pass 15% Extra Distance Limit” below the station inputs and calculate a route. RailKM multiplies the shortest track distance by 15%, adds it to the base distance and displays the maximum allowed HRMS pass distance. For example, a 1,000 km route allows up to 1,150 km.
Is break journey allowed between two stations?
Indian Railways generally permits a break journey on long-distance journeys beyond a prescribed distance, letting you pause at an intermediate station and continue later. Use the multi-via mapper to add via stops and check cumulative kilometres before planning a break.
Can I plan a route with multiple via stations?
Yes. Add up to eight stops including origin and destination. RailKM chains the legs, detects double-backs where the route revisits a station, and shows a cumulative-kilometre table for every halt.
Are RailKM distances and fares official Indian Railways figures?
No. Distances are derived from open railway timetable data and fares are ballpark estimates from standard IR distance slabs. They are indicative for planning only — always confirm timings, fares and pass eligibility with Indian Railways or IRCTC.
What is the 500 km and 1000 km break journey rule in Indian Railways vs HRMS Pass?
On a normal Indian Railways ticket, a break journey is allowed once when the total journey is 500 km or more, and twice when it is 1,000 km or more, with each break taken at an intermediate station on the ticket route. An HRMS Privilege Pass is more flexible: pass holders can take en-route break journeys at intermediate stations along the permitted route, subject to the pass rules, validity period and class entitlement, rather than the fixed 500 km / 1,000 km ticket limits.
Can I book a longer route in HRMS E-Pass if the alternate route is faster?
Yes, in two situations under the Railway Servants Pass Rules. A longer alternate route is permitted if it stays within the 15% extra distance over the shortest route, or if the longer route is quicker in travel time than the shortest-distance route. If the chosen route exceeds the 15% margin and is not faster, the extra distance is charged as per the applicable pass rules. RailKM’s HRMS checkbox shows the exact base, +15% and maximum allowed distance so you can check eligibility before booking.
What is double-back (backtracking) in HRMS Pass routing and how to avoid it?
A double-back or backtracking means travelling through the same station twice on one journey, which breaks the linearity of the permitted route and is generally not allowed for a pass unless there is no direct/linear alternative or an exceptional permission is granted. To avoid it, plan a route that never revisits a station. RailKM’s double-back detector flags any repeated station in red so you can reroute before applying for the pass.
How many Via stations or Break Journeys are allowed in an HRMS Privilege Pass / PTO?
An HRMS Privilege Pass allows en-route break journeys at intermediate stations along a valid linear route, with the number and duration governed by the pass rules and its validity period. A PTO (Privilege Ticket Order) is issued for a specific journey and route. RailKM lets you add up to eight stops including origin and destination, so you can map intermediate via and break-journey stations and confirm the route stays linear and within the 15% limit.
Why does railway track distance differ from Google Maps road distance?
Indian Railways charges distance along the actual rail network — measured through real junctions, curves and gradients between stations — not along road highways. Because trains must follow the track alignment and junction layout, the rail track distance can be longer or shorter than the road distance Google Maps shows. RailKM computes the chargeable rail track kilometres so pass and fare calculations match railway practice.
What is the validity period of an HRMS Privilege Pass and PTO?
An HRMS Privilege Pass is normally issued with a validity of five months for a full or half set of passes. A PTO (Privilege Ticket Order) is issued on payment of one-third of the ordinary fare and is valid for the journey and period specified on the order. Always verify the current validity, class and entitlement on your railway administration, as the rules are revised from time to time.
How to find the shortest path in Indian Railway using a train route finder in India?
To find the shortest path Indian railway travellers need a tool that follows the real rail network rather than roads. RailKM works as a free route finder train India passengers can rely on: enter your origin and destination and it runs a shortest-path search across 8,900+ indexed stations to compute the shortest linear rail route by total track kilometres, listing every intermediate halt with its cumulative distance.
Is RailKM a free train route mapper and what makes it the best route mapper for Indian Railways?
Yes. RailKM is a train route mapper that is completely route mapper free — no sign-up and no payment. It is built to be the best route mapper for Indian Railways because it chains multi-via stops, shows cumulative kilometres at every halt, detects double-backs, lists all intermediate stations, and runs the HRMS Pass 15% extra distance check in one place.
How to check exact railway track distance between two stations?
To check the exact railway track distance between two stations, enter the origin and destination in the RailKM mapper and add via stations if you need a specific break-journey path. RailKM then shows the exact railway track distance in kilometres, with a station-by-station cumulative table, major junctions and estimated fares.
What is the distance between railway track rails in India vs station track distance?
When people ask what is the distance between railway track rails in India, the answer is the Indian Railways Broad Gauge track width of 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) measured between the two running rails. That is different from station-to-station track distance, which is the chargeable route length between two stations. Enter both stations in RailKM to measure that railway track distance along the actual rail network.
